Chapter Eight
Shane walked into the small and modest office at the top of the stairs. It was dark and only had one light, which sat on the desk. Papers were scattered in all sorts of piles which probably had some sort of method to the chaos which he saw. Being more of an OCD type of person, Shane would most likely lose his shit if any of his workers kept their files in such order. Then he remembered he didn’t have workers anymore. He was unemployed with no prospects for the future, so he really didn’t have much room to judge.
The light from downstairs shone through the glass which overlooked the entire bar. He walked over to it and saw Quinn talking to one of his new workers. Not Theo, the one who had interrupted them, but another one who looked to be about mid-twenties with an average build.
There was a couple standing by the jukebox in the corner of the bar arguing about something. Shane couldn’t hear what they were saying, but from the way the man was swaying and barely able to keep his eyes open, it was obvious the dude had one or two too many and his woman was having none of his belligerence.
He stood there for a long while, taking in the entire view from up above. He felt like an eagle looking down from its nest. Like an eagle protecting its young, Shane felt an unrelenting urge to eyeball every man who came within six inches of Quinn.
He knew that he shouldn’t, but Shane already felt like Quinn was his. He had no rights to him and knew very little if anything about him. That didn’t stop him from wanting it to be so. It actually surprised him that he did feel such a strong pull for someone who for all intents and purposes was a stranger.
That didn’t stop him from wanting to own him, possess him, and claim him. Shane rarely wanted someone as bad as he did Shane. Maybe it was his sweet demeanor. Or maybe it was the way he blushed like a shy choir boy. The reason didn’t really matter. All that did matter was that Shane was going to do everything in his power to make this work with Quinn.
After watching the crowd below for a while, Shane walked back over to Quinn’s desk and sat down. The chair was old and creaked as he leaned back in it. His father had worked for a newspaper for a short time when he was younger and it reminded him of the old metal chair he’d sat in at his office.
He spun around and laughed at how wobbly it was. Just like his dad’s had been. It must have been a universal feature of this chair type. Spin and put your life in your hands.
Once his moment of nostalgia had passed, Shane turned on the desk light and took got a better look at the mess that was piling up on all four corners of the desk.
